Years in business: “We’ve been in the West Dundee location since 2016, but started our business in 2010 and added a retail boutique,” Lauren Perrine said.
What does this business do? “We are a design and build company. We take the whole project from start to finish and now with the boutique, we can also provide finishing touches.”
Why did you start this business? “I’m a designer and Rod is a builder and when construction slowed down and the housing crisis hit, we decided to combine our talents and do the work we love to do on our own terms.”
What is the best thing about being in West Dundee? “West Dundee is a historic, picturesque community that is well located for our clients throughout the Fox River valley. We love being a part of a great community.”
What is the biggest challenge? “Parking is a challenge and while the traffic provides great visibility, it does not make it easy for people to get to us.”
Do you find yourself remodeling your own home more because of your profession? “My family used to kid me about always re-designing my house. However, I loved changing the look of our home and I get to do it for a living. I have always had a passion for creating beauty and the peace it can bring to the place you live. Now I can bring that same passion to our clients.”
What’s the trend you’re most excited about in the kitchen and basement remodeling? “I love the way people are choosing designs that express simplicity. In a world where families are stressed and there is so much activity, they want homes that are simple, open and welcoming … uncluttered. There are so many unique ways to brighten a home and Boxwood is constantly exploring new trends. I also love the new ideas around layering and the different textures of wood and stone being used in our projects.”
What’s a trend you would like to see go away? “Over-designed spaces where the beauty of the home gets lost. I appreciated the move toward less Is more.”
When is your busiest time of year? “Fourth quarter is definitely our busiest time of year.”
What is the most popular service you provide? “Kitchen and basement remodels. People want indoor space that they enjoy being in, especially here in the Midwest.”
What is the thing you most like to do as part of your business? “Having the control over the projects as well as creating and establishing our own brand. We do this for us, not for a corporation or larger company. We can deliver great customer service without sacrificing quality.”
What is your least favorite thing to do? “Paperwork.”
If you weren’t doing this, what line of work would you be in? “Working for someone else in this field.”
How has your business changed over the years? “We started as a design company and have expanded into a kitchen and bath showroom, with an additional retail component so customers can purchase their home decor from us.”
Do you have any future plans to expand? “Yes, we’d like to create an additional location one day, as well as one day offering custom-built homes with our own unique style.”
What do you wish someone had told you before you started? “Have every detail of the contract or job in writing from the very beginning of the project.”
