The site that used to house the Barking Spider Tavern soon will be home to music and local food once again.
Dave’s Cosmic Subs and Music will be opening a spot in the old carriage house owned by Case Western Reserve University, according to a post on CWRU’s The Daily site. And — as the name gives away — it will have live music, in a first for sub shop founder Dave Lombardy. The post notes that Lombardy was a singer-songwriter and an actor before starting Dave’s Cosmic Subs.
The Barking Spider closed in 2016 after 30 years of business. The university-owned building at 11310 Juniper Road now will be leased by North Coast Cosmic Subs LLC, a Dave’s Cosmic Subs franchisee and a wholly owned subsidiary of Cleveland-based Sidhu Realty Capital.
“The operator was selected, in part, because of the quality food operation and reputation they’ve developed, but also because of their commitment to revive the strong music reputation that the Barking Spider delivered to the community for many years,” said Kevin Slesh, the university’s director of real estate, in the post.
In addition to live music, the venue will have a bar and plans to host other events like trivia and karaoke. There also are plans for a music festival to start in 2019.
“I’m very familiar with the Barking Spider’s legacy,” North Coast Cosmic Subs president Paul Sidhu said in the post. “That’s going to be very important to us. We want to complement the history and legacy that it left behind.”
Sidhu will own the University Circle location along with business partner Danny Clark, the post said.
Interior demolition has already begun, with remodeling expected to start within a month. The new venue is expected to open late this year.
