Focus on budget means no cracks in our house building

Kieran McCarthy knows what makes TV homebuilding shows such as Room to Improve and Grand Designs so entertaining: it’s the gap between the estimated cost of building your dream home, and the ultimate price. Prioritising the purchasers and their budget, as he does, means his business would make poor entertainment.

McCarthy, who is from Midleton in east Cork, did his Leaving Cert in 1996, studied civil engineering at UCC and worked in Cork, Dublin and London, before leaving to set up his own building firm, KMC Homes, in 2003.

“I had always wanted to do my own thing, so I said, next time there’s a bounce in the economy, I’d do it,” he said.
