“We had stopped in at Sound Interiors to start looking at lighting options and this pendant light was hanging in the show room – we knew it was the perfect choice for us,” says the wife.

In the living room, the couple wanted to install a propane fireplace insert but also planned to keep the original wood-burning Georgian Bay stone fireplace in the lower level family room; the two fireplaces share a chimney. Zanussi’s team carefully removed about a third of the massive brick fireplace, keeping the chimneys intact, and then custom built the new fireplace façade based on a picture the couple showed him.

“We couldn’t be happier with the result,” says the husband, “Rick’s guys did a fantastic job on the fireplace, matching the style we asked for perfectly.”

The couple also worked closely with Shelley and Jay Wallace at Fireplace and Leisure Centre to find the right contemporary-feel insert to complete the living room fireplace conversion. Rounding out the main floor renovation are new hardwood floors and a new in-floor heating system.

“We found a lovely maple flooring at Parry Sound Carpets ‘n Colours – it’s warm and inviting, and a good complement to the cedar-strip ceiling in the front hall,” says the wife.

Zanussi’s team went out of their way to keep the house livable for the family of five throughout the renovation, from putting in a temporary kitchen sink to ensure they had running water for all but a few days, to tidying up every evening. They even set up garden furniture in the living area so the family could sit and enjoy that bay view at night.

“They went above and beyond in so many little ways, it made all the difference in living through such a major disruption in our home.”

Recently, the couple undertook another, smaller, renovation, updating the master bedroom and ensuite, a lower-level bathroom, and a home office.

“It was time to make aesthetic changes to the master ensuite, and with the lower level bathroom directly below it made sense to do them both while we had all the plumbing exposed,” says the wife. “We happened upon this fabulous black-and-chrome faucet while we were sourcing bathtubs at Parry Sound Rona. It has a subtle modern feel and it became the inspiration for the ensuite design.”

The master ensuite features heated floors, porcelain tiles in Oyster and Charcoal colours, and an extra-wide soaker tub (also from Rona) that fit the existing plumbing footprint. For the master bedroom, the couple went back to Carpets ‘n Colours, looking to match the flooring used three years earlier in the living room renovation. They were able to track down enough of the same flooring and had it shipped from Calgary in time to complete the project.

The home office had been used as storage space but is now a simple and quiet office space. “There were a lot of options with this space; with a door to the outside and beside the lower-level bathroom, it was originally envisioned as a space to enter from the beach with all your wet things, long before mudrooms were common,” says the wife.

At the top of the couple’s list was an open-concept kitchen with a light, open feel that had a lot of functional space and a large island to gather at. Kristen House of Brooklace Kitchen & Bath designed the perfect layout, incorporating a desk and large pantry, along with tons of storage.

“It’s been a dream living here,” she continues. “One can sit on the deck, or in the screened porch when the bugs are out and see the trains go by on the trestle bridge, listen to the trees in the wind, the boats on the bay, and watch the wildlife we share our world with. There’s a pair of Northern Map turtles who spend the summer floating in our little bay, and a couple of ducks we affectionately call Ward and June – they like to sunbathe on the dock.

“We’ve seen mink in winter, and of course deer nibbling the hostas, a great blue heron who visits some evenings and yes, even the geese with their babies come to dine along the shallow shoreline. The sandy beach is perfect for swimming and the deep water drop-off lets us dock our boat at home. At night, when the bay is calm, the lights of Parry Sound reach across the water, almost to our shore. What’s not to love?”

This home was recently sold by Debbie Heerschap, of Royal LePage Team Advantage, Brokerage, 49 James St. in Parry Sound.
