Home Repair & Remodeling : How to Troubleshoot Garage Door Openers

Ok hi I'm Tim Gipson and I'm going to talk to you about how to troubleshoot garage door openers Now if your garage door is not working your opener is not working, there's a few basic things you want to check

Now the first thing is in your remote If your remote is not working one thing it could be that the battery is gone bad So if you'll open the back of your remote and if you roll your battery, and then it works that's an indication that your battery is weak and you need to change your battery Now when we come inside to the garage door and we actually look at the opener itself, if it is not operating at all the first thing you want to check is you have your sensors and these are safety sensors that are located about a foot off the floor On one side it will have a red light, and the other side will have a green light

And that sends a beam across so that if anything interferes then it will disengage the garage door opener So if it's not working you want to make sure to check and see if you got any obstruction And sometimes those can be bumped and those can get out of line So you'll have a red light over here and if they are out of line you may, your green light may not be illuminated on this side Now if you checked all that and you still don't have operation then you want to just check your power, make sure you haven't tripped a circuit breaker, and then also there are several adjustments

If the garage door is not coming up, if it's getting jammed when it comes up, you have an up limit switch you might want to check that And then also within the garage door opener itself you have limit controls which limit how much the garage door comes down, the amount of force it comes down with And then you can make some adjustments on the travel The other thing is keep in mind with your garage door opener, is that with this in operation all the time, the hardware that connects it to the door, you want to check this periodically to make sure that all these bolts and all these screws remain tight Remain secure

Cause that can effect, and then also whether you have a screwdriver or a chain drive, or a tract drive type of garage door opener, it's a good idea to make sure you lubricate the travel mechanism So I'm Tim Gipson and that's how to troubleshoot a garage door opener
